Laptops vs Desktop PCs

When you look at the grand scheme of things, in the technology stakes laptops are reasonably new. Personal computers have been around a long time, however, laptops seem to be overtaking in the popularity stakes.

When it comes to looking at a new computer it can be hard to decide whether a laptop or a personal computer is going to suit you best. The great news is that, as technology advances, there are more machines on offer – which helps to ensure that there is something to suit everyone.

Specifications

As computers go, you will usually find that a desktop computer has better specifications than a laptop – especially if you compare like for like price wise. This doesn’t mean that you should always go for a desktop because it is about looking at all of the options and finding the best machine for you. If you are just using a computer for day to day, general use then the specifications aren’t as important so you need to consider everything else too!

Usability

This will depend mostly on what you want to use a machine for. If you need something that you can use out and out or easily transport with you then of course, a laptop is going to be the better choice for you. If you need something for music production, graphic design or heavy gaming then it is likely a desktop computer is going to best suit your needs. It is a matter of thinking about what you are most going to use your machine for and what is going to be best suited.

As the name suggests with desktops you need to be static in one place, where as this is obviously not the case with a laptop. You can even get accessories such as kico lap trays which make laptops even easier to use – wherever you are!

Cost

The great news is that whether you want a desktop or a laptop computer you should be able to find something that matches your budget – especially if you are willing to consider second hand or refurbished machines. If you compare like for like then for the same cost you’ll probably get ‘more’ machine if you go for a desktop, but this isn’t going to have the flexibility that a laptop has so it is all a matter of personal preference.

Upgrading

If you  think you are going to look at upgrading your machine anytime in the future then a desktop machine is going to be a much better choice for you. With laptop machines it is much harder to upgrade things like memory or ram so this is something that you need to consider

The good news is that the internet is a wealth of information on this topic. If you spend a little time reading up on all of the machine options available then you should easily be able to decide what is going to be the best choice for you and your needs.
