Netflix vs Lovefilm – The Showdown

There are loads of streaming services here in the UK, so it can be hard to decide which one you should grace your TV with. The two most popular are definitely Netflix and Lovefilm though, as they have the widest selection of programs and films ready for customers to watch. TV shows like Breaking Bad and the Walking Dead can all be enjoyed for just a small fee per month – much more convenient than buying your own boxset or renting the physical DVD. Both Netflix and Lovefilm seem to offer a neverending library of things to watch, with apps that even cover the different platforms so you can watch your favourite show wherever you are. Read on for a showdown between these two streaming services to decide which one is right for you:

Binge Watching

We all love a little ‘binge watching’ every now and again, whether that’s with a golden oldie like Prison Break or an awesome newbie like Breaking Bad. Binge watching is much cheaper when done using one of these services. However, the one you choose to subscribe to totally depends on your tastes and the things you like to watch. On sheer numbers alone, Netflix is the clear winner. However, you should take a look at the programs they offer in order to decide which one you want.

  • Breaking Bad is all on Netflix and extremely successful with just about everybody who sees it.

  • The Walking Dead follows the adventures of Rick, Glenn, and Andrea, as they attempt to survive a zombie apocalypse. Only Lovefilm offers this at present, but Netflix promises it’ll be coming up soon.

  • Orange is the New Black is a program created by Netflix; and exclusive.

  • The Vampire Diaries isn’t on Lovefilm at all, but the first 3 seasons can be enjoyed on Netflix.

  • Vikings is a Lovefilm exclusive and has been renewed for a second season.

  • House of Cards is another Netflix original, it even picked up 9 Emmy nominations!

Of course there are loads more programs you can enjoy on both of these platforms, so you’ll have to do some detective work before figuring out the one for you. Both platforms also offer some quality movies, from drama to hindi movies. However, there are some improvements to be made when it comes to both platforms and their films. I feel as if both of these companies could improve their offerings, as a few great series aren’t enough to keep people on forever!

Here’s a quick lowdown of the films they offer:

  • The Shawshank Redemption shows Morgan Freeman in one of his best roles ever, starring alongside Tim Robbins. Only on Netflix.

  • Inception is a mindboggling film, only available from Lovefilm.

  • Forrest Gump is a timeless, heartwarming classic, available only on Netflix.

  • The Godfather part one is another Netflix exclusive.

  • Apocalypse Now is almost a cult film from 1979, only on Lovefilm.

Both of these platforms will play on a variety of apps, so it’s down to you to decide the service that best suits your needs. In my mind, Netflix is the clear winner!
